Smartcity Málaga

Living Lab of Smartcity Malaga: an efficiency and innovation laboratory

What is Smartcity Málaga?

Smartcity Málaga is a real-world urban laboratory (Living Lab) where energy efficiency solutions, smart grids, and advanced energy management are tested.

This space allows innovation projects to be created, validated, and tested safely under real-world conditions, with the aim of advancing towards the cities of the future.

An energy innovation ecosystem

Since its launch in 2009, Smartcity Málaga has served as a real-world environment to develop:

  • Energy efficiency and saving measures.
  • Active demand management systems.
  • Integration of renewable energies into the grid.
  • Energy storage solutions.
  • Electric mobility projects.
  • Advanced smart metering and information security services.

These technologies are key to the energy transition towards a zero-emission model.

The laboratory in numbers

The Smartcity Málaga Living Lab covers an area of the city that includes:

  • 11,000 domestic customers.
  • 1,200 businesses.

Thanks to the innovations implemented, the first five years saw:

  • Over 25% savings in electricity consumption.
  • A 20% reduction in CO₂ emissions.
  • 15% of consumption covered by distributed generation from renewable sources.

Projects developed in the Living Lab

Projects aimed at improving the current electricity grid are being developed at Smartcity Málaga, including:

  • MONICA
  • PALOMA
  • Flexiciency
  • Smart Terminal

These projects focus on:

  • The monitoring and control of medium and low-voltage networks.
  • Analysing energy losses in the grid.
  • Studying the impact of electric mobility, such as electric buses, on low-voltage networks.

Electric microgrid on the seafront promenade

As part of these initiatives, an electric microgrid has been integrated along Málaga's seafront promenade.

This microgrid makes it possible to study and manage in an integrated manner:

  • Energy generation.
  • Storage.
  • Energy consumption.
